Tamara Ward-Lucas

Tamara Ward-Lucas is a Master of Science candidate in Artificial Intelligence for Business at the University of Baltimore, with a focus on AI ethics, public policy, and responsible innovation. She recently launched an AI literacy initiative for high school students and senior citizens.

Her academic research includes evaluating accuracy, hallucination, and bias in AI-generated news summaries; delivering a presentation titled "From Data to Disparity: How Bias Scales Through AI"; collaborating on a group project examining bias in mortgage lending; and completing individual projects and papers on AI-driven cybersecurity risks in power grid operations, AI-enhanced fraud detection, AI-enabled solutions, and the global patchwork of AI legislation.

A former strategic communicator in the federal government and journalist, she covered government, politics, the environment, and energy in Maryland and on Capitol Hill. Her interest in artificial intelligence was sparked while reporting on AI's role in biodiversity and environmental policy as an E&E News Reporting Fellow. She later authored a policy paper for the Olin Brookings Commission on AI/ML applications to detect opioid prescription diversion.

A driven lifelong learner, she completed an Artificial Intelligence certificate through the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business, building a strong foundation in AI for business decision-making. Tamara holds a B.A. in Speech Communication and a Master of Journalism, both from the University of Maryland, where she was an Eleanor Merrill Fellow. She has also completed fellowships as a Brookings LEGIS Congressional Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives and a Youth Justice Fellow with the National Association of Black Journalists and the Pew Research Center.

Upon graduation, she plans to consult as an AI Ethics and Policy Strategist and, as an act of philanthropy, continue to educate local communities in Maryland on the importance of AI literacy.
